SUGAR LAND, Texas – HCU will compete in the 2023 Sugar Land Classic this Friday through Sunday at Constellation Field, home of the Houston Astros AAA affiliate Sugar Land Space Cowboys.
HCU's first matchup will be against the Lumberjacks of SFA (1-4) on Friday (2/24) at 7 p.m. followed by a clash against Seton Hall (1-2) on Saturday (2/25) at 3 p.m. The tournament will conclude with a single game Sunday (2/26) at 6 p.m. against our fellow Southland Conference opponent Lamar (5-0).
Senior outfielder/pitcher
Logan Letney is off to a hot start in the first four games of the season, Letney is tied for second in the Southland Conference with a .429 batting average, three singles resulting in an RBI and a walk. Redshirt junior infielder
Reed Chumley is hitting .273 with two doubles, four RBIs, a run, and a homerun against Baylor on Tuesday, while freshman infielder
Cash Benavidez is hitting .273 with three walks, a double, and a run for the Huskies (0-4).
SFA is off to a tough start after hosting Kansas State University this past weekend resulting in four losses for the Lumberjacks. SFA bounced back winning in dominating fashion against Prairie View A&M on Tuesday. Peyton Parker leads the Lumberjacks with a .522 batting average, six runs on 12 hits with two doubles, two RBIs, and a homerun. Alex Rodgers is also off to a good start batting .429 average with eight runs on nine hits, a pair of doubles, two homeruns, and five RBIs.
Seton Hall is coming off a road series against North Carolina where they won the first game before dropping the concluding two games to end the series. Jonathan Luders leads the Pirates with a .375 batting average, three hits, two RBIs, and a run while Will Gale is batting .364 average, four hits, and a pair of both runs and RBIs.
Lamar is off to a great start to the season after hosting the University of Oakland this past weekend, sweeping the series. The Cardinals went on to beat the fifth ranked Texas A&M in College Station on Tuesday. Lamar is led by Kanin Dodge who has a .400 batting average with six hits, three runs, two RBIs, and a double. Tanner Wilson is batting .333 average with five hits, four runs, and a double.
