HOUSTON – HCU women's basketball is back in action Thursday night when they play host to the McNeese Cowgirls at 5pm in Sharp Gym. The game can be watched live on ESPN+ with play-by-play from Garret Jones and commentary for Hall of Fame coach Van Chancellor.
HCU (11-15, 6-9 SLC) comes into this game on the heels of a heartbreaking loss against the Lamar Cardinals. With just 1.9 seconds left in the game, Lamar made a mid-range jump shot off an inbounds play to take a two point lead as HCU was unable to get a shot off on their final possession.
McNeese (9-17, 6-9 SLC) has lost four straight coming into this matchup. Most recently losing to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at home. The Huskies and Cowgirls last met in January, a game which the Cowgirls handle the Huskies 69-54.
McNeese shot nearly 50 percent from the floor and 60 percent from three-point range in that one.
Abbey Sutherland had the best offensive game of her career scoring 19-points.
N'Denasija Collins posted a double-double, scoring 13-points and grabbing 11-rebounds. Offensively, HCU could never get on a roll, shooting just over 30 percent from the floor as a team.
Paris Mullens leads the McNeese offensive attack, averaging nine points per game. While no scorer averages double figures for the Cowgirls, their offensive attack is very spread out as six players are averaging at least seven points per contest.
Collins is leading three huskies in double figures, averaging 14.1 points per game. She also leads in rebounding at 7.7 boards per game.
Julija Vujakovic and
Kennedy Wilson each contribute ten points per game. Vujakovic leads the team with 42 steals, almost double that of the next closest, Collins, who has 23.
Marilyn Nzoiwu and Sutherland have been back-and-forth for the team lead in blocks all season, with 32 and 31 respectively.
HCU hits the road for the last time this season when they face off with the Nicholls Colonels in Thibodaux Saturday afternoon. HCU has one remaining home game, senior day, when they host the Southeastern Lady Lions March 1. Senior day presentations will take place during halftime of the men's game which is scheduled for 7pm that evening.
