HOUSTON – Freshman
Ronni Grofman allowed just two singles and
Kaicey Hagler drove in four runs as the HCU softball team cruised to a five-inning 8-0 victory over TSU on Wednesday at Husky Field.
Grofman retired the side in order in the top of the first before the HCU (4-2) offense got to work in the bottom half.
Haylie Savage got things going with a one-out single. Two batters later, with two outs,
Jasie Roberts doubled to right to put runners on second and third.
Kaicey Hagler singled to right center to score a pair and put the Huskies on the board, advancing to second on the throw.
Maggie Childs hit a blooper to second that was dropped for an error and brought home Hagler, staking Grofman to a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second,
AB Garcia reached on a bunt single and then stole second. She was followed by an
Avery Drake single up the middle to place runners on the corners. Next, Savage lined a single to center to bring home Garcia with Drake advancing a base. After an
Autumn Sydlik lineout, Drake and Savage moved up on a double steal before Roberts singled through the left side to score Drake. Hagler came up next and stroked a double to left center to score both Savage and Roberts. The eighth run came on the next at-bat with Childs singling up the middle to bring Hagler around from second.
Grofman held TSU (0-6) hitless through the first three innings and then allowed a single in both the fourth and fifth. The freshman pitched five innings with two hits allowed and four strikeouts to earn her first win.
Hagler went 2-for-2 with four RBI and two runs scored. Garcia also finished a perfect 2-for-2 with a run scored while Roberts and Savage each went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI.
The Huskies are set for their home opener this Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 4:00 p.m. at Husky Field against crosstown foe Texas Southern.
