MBB: HCU cruises past Southwestern Adventist

Huskies pick up first victory of campaign, face #12 Texas on Saturday in Austin

HOUSTON, Texas --- Houston Christian University got out of the gates quick and never looked back, cruising to its first victory of the year in a 95-58 trouncing of Southwestern Adventist University Wednesday night in Sharp Gym.

The Huskies hit the Knights with a 14-0 run to start the contest. The spurt was highlighted by six early points from Pierce Bazil and capped off by a dunk from Tristan Moore and a putback from Chigozie Achara, forcing an early SWAU timeout just before the first media.
The Knights would close the game to seven, 23-16 on a bucket from Marcel Phifer, but HCU would extend the lead back into double-digits quickly thereafter. Back-to-back scores from Michael Imariagbe pushed the lead to 32-18 with just over six minutes to go, and Dominic Capriotti hit three triples over the last 4:58 of the half, the final giving the Huskies a 52-29 lead. The hosts would lead 52-33 at the break. Out of the break, the Huskies were sluggish, and the Knights took advantage, closing to within 53-40 on a Phifer three-pointer at the 17:19 mark. The Huskies got back on track however, and methodically began to pull away.

The running game got going to ignite the Huskies offense. Marcus Greene's coast-to-coast excursion pushed the lead to 23, 65-42 at the 13:22 mark. Moments later, consecutive buckets from Maring pushed the lead to 29.
Maring would grab a loose ball and find a streaking Pierce Bazil in stride for a breakaway slam that pushed the lead over 30 for the first time. Jay Alvarez then hit a fast break layup to  finish off the 10-minute stretch which saw HCU hold the Knights score just seven points.
The Huskies held Southwestern Adventist to just 31.7% from the floor, including a paltry 25.7% in the second session. HCU conversely hit at a 48.6% clip, and connected on 18-25 from the free-throw line. HCU had 23 assists on 36 made baskets on the night.

Five players dented double-digits for HCU, led by Alvarez who matched a career-best with 21 points on 10-14 shooting, and also grabbed nine rebounds. Michael Imariagbe and Bonke Maring each had a double-double; Imariagbe going for 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Maring had 13 points and 12 rebounds, eight offensive. He also had five assists and three steals.

Marcus Greene had 11 points, five assists and tied his career-high with seven assists, while Dominic Capriotti went 4-7 from long range for 12 points.

Jason Garcia had 17 points, five rebounds and five assists while Marcel Phifer had 16 points to lead the way for the Knights.
