SB: Huskies add quintet in early signing period

Local products set to join HCU for 2025 season

HOUSTON – HCU has added five players during the early period as announced by Head Coach Mary-Ellen Hall on Sunday. The quintet of Madison Dominguez, Leah Hammack, Cara Pitman, Zaria Turner and Hanna York have all signed national letters of intent to play for the Huskies, arriving in Fall of 2024 ahead of the 2025 season.

All five ladies hail from the Greater Houston area and the group is the largest early signing class since 2016, when HCU also signed five.

------

MaddyDominguez

Madison Dominguez is an outfielder from LaPorte High. A 5'2 speedster, she has batted over .440 and been named as a first-team All-District selection in each of her first three seasons with the Bulldogs while playing for coach Bryant Upshaw.

She played club softball with Prolific Fastpitch and coach Ray Vaughn, and now plays with future teammate Hannah York as a part of the Texas Bombers Gold American program and coach Adrian Rodriguez.

HALL ON DOMINGUEZ:

"Maddy brings speed, speed ... and more speed. She knows how to read the defense when slapping and is definitely a triple threat. She will be a great compliment to AB in the oufield."

LeahHammack
A 5'9 pitcher from Magnolia High School,
Leah Hammack is one of two full-time hurlers in the class. After pitching 41 innings with 39 K's as a freshman for coach Angela Cooper, Hammack returned to the circle for two straight All-District seasons in which she combined for 360 strikeouts in just over 200 innings.

She also batted .389 as a junior with six homers and 40 RBI. Hammack is a member of Sudden Impact Gold, playing for coach Todd Leach.

HALL ON HAMMACK:

"Leah is a fierce competitor in the circle and will get her fair share of strikeouts. She has good command of her pitches and reminds us of our senior Katy Janes. She'll get the chance to hit as well, and will provide some power with her bat."

CaraPitman

Cara Pitman is a 5'5 utility player who has played third base in addition to spending time in the circle for coach Chelsea Boles at Dawson High School in Pearland.

The District Newcomer of the Year as a freshman, Pitman has seen success in both field and circle for the Eagles, posting a .364 batting average as a sophomore, and then posting a 1.88 ERA as a junior. She plays club for Bombers Gold Jacoby and coach Kelli Jacoby.

HALL ON PITMAN:

"Cara is a true utility player. She loves to play defense and we believe she can play several positions at the college level. She will also spend some time pitching, bringing the same intensity to the circle that she has on defense."

——

ZariaTurner
The second full-time hurler in the class is
Zaria Turner from George Ranch High School. The 5'6 southpaw was voted 2023 District 20-6A Pitcher of the Year after winning 15 games for the Longhorns, posting a 2.17 ERA while fanning 203 batters in 122 innings for coach Emily Witt. She plays her select ball with Impact Gold National Elder and coach Danny Elder.

Zaria will be the first left-handed pitcher for HCU since Lori Earl in 2013, and just the fourth in school history.

HALL ON TURNER:

"As a left-hander, Zaria gives us a completely different look in the circle. She spins it really well, which makes her curve ball really move. She will definitely keep batters off balance, and she has great mound presence."

——

HannaYork

Hanna York comes to the Huskies from Deer Park High School. A 5'4 shortstop, York was the District Newcomer of the Year as a freshman, led the Deer to a state semi-final appearance as a sophomore, and a regional semi-final appearance as a junior. She was a First-team All-District selection for coach Amy Vidal in 2023 after batting .365 with nine homers and 38 RBI.

She has played select for coach Adrian Rodriguez and Texas Bombers Gold American, where she was chosen as the Bombers Defensive Player of the Year in 2021. She is also currently teammates on the Bombers with future HCU teammate Madison Dominguez.

HALL ON YORK:

"Hanna brings a big bat to our lineup with power to all fields. She is a standout athlete who can play several positions, but will likely see most of her time at short."

Mary-Ellen Hall returns for her 33rd season at the helm of her alma mater. Her 2024 edition returns six starters and the entire pitching staff off a team that finished 20-33 and advanced to the Southland Conference Tournament last year.

The Huskies are tentatively slated to open the 2024 season February 9-11 at the Alabama State Stinger Tournament in Montgomery, Alabama.
