VB: Huskies Shut Out Commerce in Straight Sets

HCU sweeps both matchups during 2023 season; expand all time record to 12-3 against Lions

COMMERCE, Texas – The Huskies sweep Texas A&M-Commerce to remain in solo 4th place in the conference standing with two matches left in Southland play (25-16, 25-17, 27-25). The Huskies remain undefeated against the Lions sweeping Commerce in both matchups this conference season and increase the set differential to 12-3 over the four matches played since Commerce joined the Southland last year.

After falling the first three points of the opening set, the Huskies (15-12, 10-5 SLC) rallied with eight straight points bookended with kills by Cassidy Drapela. HCU extended the lead to six points at 12-6 off a kill by Sara Arroyo. The Huskies continued to roll pushing the lead to seven points at 17-10 off back-to-back kills by Lexie Temple and Anna Gadway. Texas A&M-Commerce couldn't recover as HCU increased the lead to nine points at 23-12 off four straight points including two kills by Audrey Pearce and an ace by Jaleesa Caroccio. The Huskies cruised to an opening set, 25-16, win.

HCU picked up where they left off in the second set taking an early 4-2 lead capped off with another ace by Caroccio. At 6-4, the Lions (9-20, 5-11 SLC) tallied a five-point run feeding Kitana Tuufuli on three straight kills to grab a 9-6 lead. Trailing three points at 10-7, HCU found their rhythm racking up a seven-point run including two kills by Gadway, three kills by Temple, and a kill by Drapela, to claim a 14-10 lead. The Huskies furthered their lead to five points at 18-13 before the Lions got within one point at 18-17 scoring four straight points. The Huskies closed out the second set with a seven-point run capped off with back-to-back aces from Pearce to win, 25-17.

With their backs against the wall, the Lions came out firing early in the decisive third set grabbing an early 5-3 lead. Texas A&M-Commerce extended the lead to four points at 8-4 off a three-point run before the Huskies tied the set at 9-9 off a four-point run of their own starting with a kill by Temple. The Huskies notched their first lead of the set at 11-10 with a kill by Drapela but the Lions roared back to retake the lead at 19-13 off seven straight points. Although Commerce increased the lead to seven points at 21-14, HCU secured the next five points and scored 10 of the next 12 points to tie the game at 23-23 and force set point at 24-23. The Lions tied the set at 24-24 but couldn't hold off the Huskies closing out the match in extra points, 27-25.

The Huskies were led by Gadway with 12 kills and three blocks while Drapela added 12 kills and five digs. Temple controlled the net with eight blocks along with nine kills. Grace McLaughlin recorded a double-double dishing out 36 assists and 10 digs. Kaley Feris dominated the Husky back line with 13 digs.

Texas A&M-Commerce were led by Essence Allen with 11 kills and nine digs while Kitana Tuufuli added eight digs. Peyton Plant dished out 19 assists and Breann Connally added 15 assists. The Lion's defense was led by Millie Allgood with 10 digs.

The Huskies will conclude the regular season schedule with back-to-back conference matchups in Sharp Gym. HCU will battle McNeese on Thursday, November 9th at 6:30 p.m. and will close out the regular season against Nicholls on Saturday, November 11th at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
