VB: Huskies Down McNeese in Four Sets at Sharp Gym

HCU extend win streak to four straight after knocking off the Cowgirls

HOUSTON, Texas – The Huskies came from behind to knock off McNeese in four sets (20-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-14). HCU extend the win streak to four straight games heading into the final match of the conference season against Nicholls on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Sharp Gym.

The Cowgirls got off to a quick start in the opening set grabbing a, 7-3, lead off a four-point run. At 8-4, the Huskies rallied with five straight points including back-to-back kills by Sara Arroyo to claim the lead at 9-8. After McNeese reclaimed the lead at 13-12, HCU tied the set with a kill by Cassidy Drapela before the Cowgirls got the lead back to two-points at 15-13. The Huskies narrowed the margin to one point at 19-18 until McNeese claimed six of the last eight points of the opening set to capture set one, 25-20.

The Huskies (17-12, 12-5 SLC) claimed a fast 4-1 lead in set two including two kills by Drapela and an ace by Jaleesa Caroccio. HCU held the three-point lead through 10-7 before McNeese tied the set at 11-11. The Cowgirls grabbed their only lead of set two at 15-14 until a four-point run by the Huskies allowed HCU to reclaim a three-point lead at 18-15. The Cowgirls minimized the deficit to one point at 21-20 but the Huskies tallied the last four points of the second set bookended with kills by Arroyo to claim set two, 25-20.

In set three, McNeese (15-15, 13-4 SLC) came out with a vengeance snagging an early 4-2 lead before four straight points by the Huskies, including back-to-back aces by Caroccio, gave HCU the lead at 6-4. The Huskies held the lead through 9-8, but a three-point run by the Cowgirls allowed McNeese to reclaim the lead at 11-9. HCU tied the game at 13-13 until the Cowgirls claimed four of the next five points to hold a three-point lead at 17-14. Down by two points at 21-19, the Huskies recorded two straight points to tie the game with a block by Anna Gadway and Audrey Pearce followed by a kill from Pearce. After a kill by the Cowgirls, the Huskies scored four of the last five points including a kill by Grace McLaughlin, two kills by Arroyo, and a kill by Gadway to take set three, 25-23.

HCU picked up right where they left off tallying four of the first five points of the fourth set to take an early, 4-1, lead. The Cowgirls fought their way back to tie the set at 9-9 before the Huskies recorded a three-point run including back-to-back aces by Kaley Feris. After a point McNeese, HCU broke off seven straight points bookended with kills by Drapela. The Huskies extended the lead to 10 points at 21-11 and cruised to a match victory claiming the fourth set, 25-14.

The Huskies were led by Arroyo with 18 kills while Drapela added 16 kills. McLaughlin notched a double-double dishing out 47 assists along with 15 digs. Tatiana Evans led the Husky' back line with 16 digs while Feris added 15 digs.

The Cowgirls were led by Carissa Chainey with 16 kills and 12 digs. Kayla Wilson recorded 13 kills while McKenzie Moore added 10 kills to McNeese's offense. Megan Grose dished out 45 assists and Bailey Tillman led the Cowgirl's defense with 22 digs.

HCU will host Nicholls on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Sharp Gym for Senior Day to round out conference play. Live broadcast will be available on ESPN+!
