WSOC: HCU Falls in SLC Semifinals to McNeese

The seventh-seed Huskies out-shoot the No. 3 seed but drop a 1-0 decision

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – HCU held a distinct advantage in control of the ball and out-shot the McNeese Cowgirls, 17-7, but suffered a 1-0 loss in the semifinals of the Southland Conference Tournament.

The Huskies (7-11) had the first real dangerous look at the goal on a sixth minute long-range attempt that sent McNeese (9-7-4) keeper Jackie Kelly flying through the air and hit the top corner of the crossbar. HCU keeper Chloe Bagshaw had a relatively quiet half, being forced into just one easy save. Kelly, meanwhile, was kept on her toes by the Huskies with five attempts on target in the half.

After a scoreless first 45, the Cowgirls took just over a minute to strike the first blow. Kiana Kukaua served a ball into the box that fell in between multiple HCU defenders at the feet of Morgan Schooley who knocked it into the top of the net for a 1-0 McNeese advantage.

Emily Jaimes, Ryan Ford, Xya Balderas and Katie Marker all had shots on goal the rest of the second half, but to no avail. HCU totaled nine shots on goal in the loss while limiting McNeese to just four. In goal, Bagshaw finished with three saves for the Huskies.
