WBB: HCU Cruises to 80-46 Win Over Mount St. Joseph

N’Denasija Collins leads the way with 17 points and seven rebounds

HOUSTON – The HCU women's basketball team never trailed on Wednesday evening, earning an 80-46 win over visiting Mount St. Joseph in non-conference action in Sharp Gym.

The Huskies (2-4) got out to a quick 4-0 advantage thanks to a pair of buckets from Jo Oly and by the time the first quarter hit the 6:10 mark on the clock, that lead had grown to 11-2. HCU continued to build that lead and held a 25-10 advantage at the end of the quarter. By the end of the half, it was a 21-point lead, 45-24, for the Huskies led by Enya Maguire, who was 4-of-4 from the field for 11 points while Kennedy Wilson had 10 points with five steals.

Another Enya Maguire three early in the third quarter pushed the HCU lead to 48-24, but an 11-4 burst by the Lions (6-0) cut that to just 17, 52-35, with 4:07 to go in the period. N'Denasija Collins answered with a made layup along with an ensuing free throw but MSJ got a three from Amanda Lovejoy on the next possession to keep it a 17-point game. The Huskies then kept the Lions scoreless for a stretch of almost nine minutes as part of a 25-0 run to lead 80-38 with just three minutes left to play. The Lions scored the final eight points of the game for the 80-46 final.

Collins led all players with 17 points and seven rebounds, connecting on 8-of-14 from the field while also adding four assists. Wilson ended the night shooting 7-of-8 for 16 points while setting a new career-high with six steals and adding five assists. Enya Maguire finished with 14 points, hitting 4-of-6 from beyond the arc while Elizabeth Matadi set new career-highs of nine points and four blocked shots.

The Huskies shot 60 percent (33-of-55) as a team from the floor, 40 percent (4-of-10) from three and 90.9 percent (10-of-11) from the foul line. HCU held a 37-20 advantage on the boards and scored 54 of its points inside the paint. The Huskies forced MSJ into 21 turnovers and held the Lions to 34 percent (18-of-53) shooting for the game.

HCU remains at home for its next game, a Monday, Nov. 27, contest vs. Howard Payne inside Sharp Gym at 6:00 p.m.
