BLACKSBURG, Va. – HCU dropped a tough matchup on Thursday evening at Cassell Coliseum, falling to ninth-ranked Virginia Tech, 105-36.
The Hokies (2-1) jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead but a pair of three-pointers for HCU (1-3) by
Enya Maguire and
N'Denasija Collins along with jumpers by
Kennedy Wilson and Maguire pulled the Huskies within four, 14-10, with 5:15 left in the first quarter. Virginia Tech pulled away as the quarter wore on, however, and led 30-16 at the end of the period. The Hokies, who reached the Final Four last season, took over from there and limited the Huskies to just 20 points over the final three quarters.
Maguire led HCU with 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-10 from beyond the arc. Collins added seven points while
Elizabeth Matadi scored six on 3-of-6 shooting off the bench. As team, HCU finished the game with a season-low 10 turnovers. For the game, the Huskies shot 22.4 percent (13-of-58) from the floor.
The Hokies were led by Elizabeth Kitley who scored 23 points in just 21 minutes and was one of six players to score in double-figures. Virginia Tech shot 64.5 percent (40-of-62) for the game and out-rebounded the Huskies, 49-19.
HCU returns to the Lone Star State to face the Texas A&M Aggies on Monday, Nov. 20, at 7:00 p.m. in Bryan-College Station, Texas.
