WSOC: Huskies Enter Final Game with SLC Tournament Berth on the Line

HCU must earn a win over visiting UIW to earn a spot in the conference tournament

HOUSTON – The HCU women's soccer team closes the regular season on Friday evening at 5:00 p.m. vs. UIW at Sorrels Field needing a win to surpass the Cardinals in the standings and earn a bid to the Southland Conference Tournament.

The Huskies (5-10, 3-6 SLC) are currently in eighth place in the conference standings, one point behind UIW (6-7-2, 3-5-1 SLC) for seventh. The top seven teams in the league standings qualify for the SLC tournament that begins Wednesday, Nov. 1, in Corpus Christi, Texas.

HCU has split its last four games, going 2-2, most recently falling 2-1 at Northwestern State. Freshman Olivia Rossman pulled the Huskies level with a goal early in the second half but the Lady Demons got the game-winner in the 74th minute. Rossman has had a solid inaugural campaign and is tied for second on the team with three goals.

The Cardinals moved ahead of the Huskies in the standings last weekend, picking up three points from a 2-0 home win over McNeese and then another with a 1-1 road tie vs. Texas A&M-Commerce. Senior forward Sierra Wannamaker leads the way with four goals while sophomore Brianna Mata has three. Freshman goalkeeper Erica Defferding has allowed just 10 goals in 12 matches for a 0.83 goals against average.

Prior to the start of Friday's game, the Huskies will recognize nine members of the 2023 team who are in their final season with the program due to being in their final year of eligibility or who are set to graduate.
