HAMMOND, La. – Thursday evening will mark the first Southland Conference road game of the season for HCU men's basketball when the Huskies take on Southeastern at the University Center at 7:30 p.m.
The Huskies (4-10, 1-0 SLC) are coming off a 101-96 overtime home win against New Orleans to open conference play and boast the reigning SLC Player of the Week in
Bonke Maring. Maring put up 24 points and nine rebounds in 26 minutes on the floor in the win over UNO and was 12-of-14 from the floor. Maring leads the league and ranks 22
nd in the nation with a 62.1 percent field goal percentage for the season.
Freshman point guard
Andrew King has been on a tear since the Huskies' game at Missouri in late November, an eight-game span in which he has averaged 11.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game with 13 steals. His season average of 3.9 apg is seventh-best nationally among all freshmen. Junior guard
Brycen Long currently stands at 128 made three-pointers for his career, just nine away from entering the program's top-10 for career three-pointers.
Southeastern (6-8, 0-1 SLC) has lost three of its last four, including its SLC opener at Nicholls, 88-73, back on Dec. 15. Most recently, the Lions fell at Vanderbilt by a 93-55 final. A pair of senior guards, Boogie Anderson and Christian Agnew, lead the Lions with 11.6 and 11.5 ppg, respectively. Anderson is shooting 49.3 percent (75-of-152) from the field, taking all but two of his shot attempts from inside the three-point arc. Sophomore Roger McFarlane leads the team with seven rpg.
HCU owns the best field goal percentage in the league, making 47.7 percent from the floor, and is second in three-point field goal percentage, shooting 37.3 percent from long-range. Southeastern is third in both categories, shooting 44.8 percent overall and 36.1 percent from three.
The Huskies and Lions played three times last season with Southeastern earning a win in the Southland Preseason Tip-Off. In conference play, the home team won both meeting with the Huskies taking a 93-80 win in Sharp Gym before falling, 84-89, at SLU.
