NATCHITOCHES, Louisiana – HCU women's basketball heads to Louisiana to take on the Northwestern State Lady Lions Thursday night before traveling back to the Lone Star State for a rematch against Texas A&M-Commerce Saturday afternoon. Both games can be seen live on ESPN+ or listened to live on the Husky Sports Network at HCUHuskies.com, with play-by-play from Garrett Jones.
HCU (8-10, 3-4 SLC) just split two home games against UIW and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. HCU took care of business, beating the Cardinals by 19 before dropping the following contest to the Islanders.
Kennedy Wilson had her second highest scoring total of the season against the Cardinals with 19 points while
Julija Vujakovic and
Abbey Sutherland combined for an additional 29.
Marilyn Nzoiwu had another double-digit rebounding effort with 12. HCU shot 53 percent from the floor and 50 percent from distance as a team and knocked down 12-of-15 free throw attempts.
N'Denasija carried the offensive load against the Islanders with 17 points, the only Husky in double figures. HCU and TAMCC were back and forth through the first three quarters before the Islanders exploded on offense in the fourth quarter, scoring 24 points on 83 percent shooting while holding HCU to just six points on 22 percent shooting.
Northwestern State (7-10, 3-4 SLC) has lost back-to-back conference games against SLU and New Orleans. Candace Parramore is the only Lady Demon averaging double figures with 10.1 ppg. Alecia Whyte is the teams leading rebounder, pulling in 5.6 rpg.
HCU has won four consecutive matchups against the Lady Demons including the last two in Natchitoches.
HCU follows up their game in Louisiana with a rematch against Commerce (8-11, 6-1 SLC). The Lady Lions are enjoying their first year in Division I and the Southland Conference and are currently tied for first place in the league.
Commerce came to Sharp Gym on January 12th and beat the Huskies by one possession, 65-62. The Huskies closest game of the year saw 15 lead changes and seven ties. HCU will look to even the season series and move one spot closer to the top of the conference standings.
Dyani Robinson, who scored 11 points against HCU in their first meeting, is leading Commerce in scoring with 17.1 ppg. DesiRay Kernal, who dropped 18 in the first meeting, is averaging 11.2 ppg and is leading in rebounding with 7.4 rpg.
Collins and Vujakovic lead the Huskies offensive attack averaging 12.9 and 10.8 ppg. Collins and Nzoiwu are neck and neck for the rebounding lead averaging 6.9 and 6.8 boards per game respectively.
Enya Maguire and
Jo Oly help lead the HCU bench unit and are both shooting over 44 percent from three-point distance this season.
HCU returns home to Sharp Gym next week to take on the Lady Demons on Thursday before hosting the Nicholls Colonels February 4th.
