NATCHITOCHES, La. – Fresh off a 12-point win over defending Southland Conference Tournament champion Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, the HCU men's basketball team hits the road to visit Northwestern State and reigning SLC Player of the Week Ja'Monta Black on Thursday night at Prather Coliseum.
HCU (7-13, 4-3 SLC) split a pair of home games last week after picking up a conference road win at McNeese on Jan. 14. The Huskies fell to UIW before defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 90-78, this past Saturday and handing the Islanders a 12-point loss, their largest margin in a loss since a Dec. 20 loss at Oklahoma State.
Maks Klanjscek led the Huskies with 20 points in the win with four other players scoring in double-figures.
Through seven conference games, senior
Bonke Maring leads the league in shooting with a 66.2 percent (49-of-74) mark from the field. For the season, Maring ranks 20
th nationally in field goal percentage at 62 percent (132-of-213). Freshman
Andrew King leads all players in league play with an assist/turnover ratio of 2.6 while his 5.1 assists per game ranks fourth.
Northwestern State (12-8, 4-3 SLC) has won its last two and four of the last five, most recently defeating New Orleans on the road, 88-65. Ja'Monta Black led the Demons with 28 points while DeMarcus Sharp added 26 in the win over the Privateers.
Black and Sharp, both seniors, combine with sophomore Isaac Haney to provide a large portion of the Demons' offense. The trio has attempted more than 60 percent of the team's field goal attempts this season. Black leads the conference in scoring in league play, averaging 20 ppg and making 5.1 three-pointers per game. Freshman Jalen Hampton leads the team with 7.1 rebounds per game.
The Huskies and Demons split their two meetings last season with the road team taking the win on both occasions. Northwestern State first earned a 97-87 win in Sharp Gym before HCU returned the favor a week later with a 76-69 victory in Natchitoches.
HCU will make the trek to Commerce, Texas for the second leg of the current road trip to face Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 4:30 p.m.
