HOUSTON, TX – HCU women's basketball is set to play host to the Texas A&M-Corpus Islanders Saturday afternoon at 2pm inside of Sharp Gym. The game can be viewed live on ESPN+ with play-by-play from Garrett Jones and commentary from Hall-of-Famer Van Chancellor.
HCU (8-9, 3-3 SLC) moved up to fourth in the conference standings after beating the UIW Cardinals 71-52 Thursday night.

Kennedy Wilson scored a game high 19 points, just one-point shy of her season high. Julija Vujakovic rediscovered her shooting form, scoring 17-points on 3-of-6 shooting from downtown. Marilyn Nzoiwu had a busy night in the paint, racking up 12 rebounds. Abbey Sutherland scored in bunches early leading to 12 points for the game.

Texas A&M-Corpus (10-7, 5-1 SLC) currently sits second in the conference, just one game back of the Texas A&M-Commerce Lady Lions. The Islanders opened up conference play with three consecutive wins before dropping their lone game against SLU. More recently they have won back-to-back contests against New Orleans and Lamar.

Alecia Westbrook, who has two Southland Player-of-the-Week awards this season is nearly averaging a double-double with a team high 11.6 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. Makinna Serrata is the only other Islander averaging double-figure scoring at 10.6 ppg.

HCU lost two-of-three meetings against the Islanders in 2021-22 season. The teams squared off in non-conference play where Corpus won, before splitting the conference series. Overall the Huskies are 8-13 against the Islanders dating back to 2011. In the lone Huskies win of last season, Marilyn Nzoiwu posted a 13-point 13-rebound double-double. Kennedy Wilson also dropped 12 points in the win.

N'Denasija Collins and Vujakovic are the only Huskies averaging double-figures in scoring with 12.7 and 11.3 points respectively. Nzoiwu's 13 rebound performance against the Cardinals tied her with Collins for the team lead in rebounds, each with 7.0 rebounds per game.

The women's team heads back out on the road next week with Southland matchups against Northwestern State on Thursday before a rematch with Commerce on Saturday.
