COMMERCE, Texas – Southland Conference begins this Friday against conference newcomer Texas A&M-Commerce for the HBU women's soccer team with the Huskies then returning home for their first home game of the season at Sorrels Field against the Houston Cougars on Sunday evening.
The Huskies (0-3-2) most recently traveled to Huntsville, Texas, playing to a 1-1 draw with former conference rival Sam Houston. Junior
Katie Marker scored for HBU, giving her three goals on the season. Marker's three goals tie her for third in the conference with two players having scored four. As a team, the Huskies attempted a season-high 18 shots against the Bearkats with seven shots on goal.
Texas A&M-Commerce (0-4-1) earned a tie in its last game, a 2-2 affair on the road against Colorado College. The Lions were held scoreless through their first four games of the year. Junior Mindy Shoffit scored the lone goal by a Lions player this season in the 87
th minute to secure the draw against Colorado College.
Sunday's match against Houston (2-2-1) is the Huskies' home opener and also the team's final non-conference game of the season. The Cougars face Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas on Thursday evening. UH has wins this season over a pair of common opponents with the Huskies, defeating Sam Houston, 2-1, on the road and downing Rice, 3-1, at home. UH has scored six goals this season with six different players scoring. Freshman Haley Woodward has played every minute in goal, sporting a 1.80 goals against average and a .735 save percentage.
Friday will mark the first ever meeting between the Huskies and Lions while Sunday's matchup will be game number 10 against the Cougars. HBU is 2-5-2 all-time against UH with the Cougars winning the last two meetings. HBU's last win over UH came in 2018 with the Huskies earning a 3-1 season-opening win at Sorrels Field.
After Sunday, it's SLC play all the way through the end of the season for HBU beginning with a visit to Corpus Christi, Texas to take on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Friday, Sep. 16.
