NATCHITOCHES, La. – The HCU women's soccer team leaves the state of Texas for the first time this season, traveling to Louisiana to take on Northwestern State at 7:00 p.m. at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.
HCU (1-6-3, 1-2-1 SLC) is coming off a four-point weekend following a resounding 4-1 win over Southeastern and a 0-0 tie with UIW. The Huskies are currently tied for sixth in the league standings through four games but are just three points behind the Lady Demons (5-2-2, 2-1-1 SLC) who are in a tie for third.
A pair of redshirt freshmen earned Southland Conference Player of the Week honors for their performances last weekend with
Emily Jaimes named Offensive POTW and
Chloe Bagshaw taking Goalkeeper POTW. Jaimes netted a pair of goals in the Friday win over SLU with
Xya Balderas and
Mia Salas also finding the goal. Bagshaw allowed one goal across two matches, making five saves while facing a total of 23 shots.
Northwestern State, the defending SLC champion, defeated Texas A&M-Commerce, 4-1, on the road in its last matchup. The Lady Demons' Olivia Draguicevich, a senior forward and last year's SLC Player of the Year, leads all players in the league with seven goals. The Lady Demons have out-scored opponents 21-7 so far this season with senior goalkeeper Chloe DeShazer posting a 0.74 goals against average.
The Huskies are 5-6-1 all-time against the Lady Demons but NSU has won the last four meetings. In games played in Natchitoches, La., HCU holds a 3-2-1 advantage.
HCU returns to the Lone Star State next weekend, first hosting Nicholls at Sorrels Field on Friday, Oct. 7, before heading to San Antonio, Texas for a rematch with UIW on Sunday, Oct. 9.
