WSOC: Huskies Fall to UH in Final Non-Conference Match

Ryan Ford scores for HBU in the 3-1 loss

HOUSTON – The HBU women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Houston at Sorrels Field on Sunday evening in what was the Huskies' first home game and last non-conference game of the season.

HBU (0-5-2) freshman Alexia Murillo put the first shot on target in the game with a laser from distance in the ninth minute but Houston (3-3-1) goalkeeper Haley Woodward was there to make the top left corner save. The Cougars struck first with Janna Singleton putting a shot on goal with the HBU defense making a stop but Singleton collected the rebound and put it into the back of the net at the 20:16 mark. Nadia Kamassah made it a 2-0 game in the 40th minute with an assist from Maddie Bowers. Mia Salas put an attempt on target less than a minute later from just outside the 18-yard box to no avail with the Huskies heading into the half down two.

In the second half, HBU had a near miss in the 56th minute when Isabella Cheek put a shot off the top corner of the crossbar. Just over 10 minutes later, UH's Caitlyn Matthews extended the lead with her first goal of the year. The Huskies got on the board in the 73rd minute when senior Ryan Ford stole possession near the corner of the HBU 18-yard box and quickly beat the keeper to the far post, tucking the shot just inside the left post for her first goal of the season.

Ford's goal, her first of the year, gives her seven for her career. In goal, freshman Taylor Sanderson made her first career start and finished with four saves.

It's all Southland Conference play from here on out for the Huskies who hit the road on Friday, Sep. 16, for a matchup with the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in Corpus Christi, Texas at 7:00 p.m.
