HAMMOND, La – The HBU Huskies won their first game in the Southland Conference Championship Tuesday afternoon in extra innings against the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders at North Oak Park.
HBU (18-28) threated early in the first inning but could not get on the board.
Caitlyn Brockway and
Haylie Savage singled before the Islanders walked
Sarah Venker with two outs to load the bases. Unfortunately, the Huskies were not able to scratch across a run and stranded the bases loaded.
The Islanders (23-26) put up runs in each of the first two innings. In the first, and RBI single from Ashleigh Sgambelluri and in the second, an RBI double from Kimane Rogron.
The Huskies threatened again the top of the third following another Brockway rope up the middle and a
Jasie Roberts single, but stranded them both on base.
Madison Cotton came in relief of
Lyndie Swanson with a runner on second and no outs in the bottom of the third and retired the first three hitters she faced to keep the Huskies down by just two.
HBU put up a three spot in the top of the fifth inning. Brockway walked before Savage and Roberts smacked singles up the middle to load the bases.
Sarah Venker came to the plate and singled in a run to right field cutting the lead to just one.
Avery Drake came to the dish and had an RBI fielder's choice before the catcher fumbled the throw and allowed Savage to come around and score to give the Huskies the one run lead.
Texas A&M Corpus Christi answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth on a Siara Galvan RBI single. Cotton worked around the bases loaded jam and stranded the bases loaded while preserving the tie.
Baylee Chandler opened the eighth inning with a single for HBU before
Shelby Echols dropped down a perfect sac bunt to move Chandler to second. Brockway walked to put runners on second and third with one out. Following a strikeout, Roberts hit a single to right field to score Chandler before an errant throw from the Islanders allowed Brockway to score and give the Huskies a 5-3 advantage.
The Islanders were not going down without a fight when Hoyt drove in a run following a leadoff triple from Pal Egan. With one out, Torres singled to advance the tying run into scoring position. The game ended when Morse stepped to the plate and smoked a ground ball to Savage at third base who picked it clean stepped on the bag and threw it across the diamond to Brockway at first.
For the game, Roberts led the way with four hits while Brockway, Savage and Venker all had two. Brockway reached base in all five plate appearances, walking three times. Roberts, Venker, and Drake all dove in runs for the Huskies.
Swanson got the start in the circle for HBU, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out one over two innings of work. Cotton picked up the win, giving up two runs on eight hits while striking out two in six innings of relief work.
The Huskies will play at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow afternoon against the winner of Southeastern and Nicholls which will be played later this evening.
