SB: Huskies Downed by Lady Lions in Southland Tournament

Huskies play an elimination game tonight against UIW

HAMMOND, La – The sixth ranked HBU Huskies dropped their second round matchup of the  Southland Conference Tournament against the second ranked Southeastern Lady Lions Wednesday afternoon at North Oak Park.

HBU (17-28) got on the board early in the top of the first inning. Caitlyn Brockway doubled before Haylie Savage moved her over with a single to right field. Jasie Roberts came to the plate and sent a sac fly to right center field, deep enough to bring in Brockway.

The Lady Lions (39-14) did not let the Huskies hold the lead long, answering with a three spot in the bottom of the first inning. A single and two walks loaded the bases for Southeastern. Maddie Watson came to the plate and hit a sac fly, driving in one to even the score at one. Back-to-back singles drove in two more runs and the Lady Lions took a 3-1 lead into the second.

In the third inning, Brockway was hit by a pitch before Savage walked and Roberts singled to load the bases. Sarah Venker came to the dish and sent a bases clearing double down the left field line to give the Huskies the lead 4-3.

Southeastern responded again, scoring a run on a throwing error by the Huskies, notching things once again at 4-4.

In the fourth inning, Shelby Echols reached base via a walk before Brockway drove a double off the base of the left field wall, scoring Echols all the way from first, giving the Huskies a 5-4 advantage.

The Lady Lions fought back in the bottom of the fifth, when the first two hitters of the inning singled before Lexi Johnson doubled to right center to even the game at five. Lyndie Swanson came in relief for the Huskies, striking out the first hitter she faced before an RBI fielder's choice and some aggressive base running brought in two runs for the Lady Lions, giving them a 7-5 lead.

Southeastern scratched across an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a Bailey Krolczyk RBI double to extend the lead to 8-5.

Venker led the Huskies offensively, going 3-for-4 at the dish with three RBIs. Brockway was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Roberts was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Cotton got the loss after relieving Venker in the first inning. She allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out one over 3.2 innings of work.

The Huskies will play later this evening in a win or go home game against the UIW Cardinals immediately following the Texas A&M Corpus and Nicholls game.
