Venker and Echols each go for 3-for-4 and Swanson throws a CG to lead Huskies to win

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The HBU softball team used a big sixth inning to win the rubber match of their series against Southland Conference foe UIW Cardinals Saturday afternoon at H.E.B. Field.

Haylie Savage got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the third inning to open the scoring for the scoring for the Huskies (12-19, 2-6 SLC). Sarah Venker came to the dish and hit a two RBI double to left field to drive in Caitlyn Brockway and Shelby Echols to extend the HBU lead to 3-0.

UIW (12-26, 3-6 SLC) answered with a four run bottom of the fourth to quickly take the lead away from the Huskies on a pair of RBI singles and a two RBI double.

Jasie Roberts opened the fourth inning with a single for the Huskies before team hitting leader Echols came to the dish and hit an RBI triple to even the score at four.

In the sixth inning, Roberts, Savage, and Venker all drove in runs for HBU to open up their lead to 7-4. Lyndie Swanson who got the start for the Huskies shut down the Cardinal offense from the fourth inning on, with the third inning being her only blemish on the day.

Swanson threw her seventh complete game on the season while picking up her sixth win. She allowed seven hits and struck out four over her 7.0 innings of work. Echols and Venker each had three hit days for the Huskies and Venker drove in a team high three runs.

For the Cardinals, Savannah Behabetz went 3-for-4 while Maddie Boldt drove in a pair of runners. Annie Gunther was credited with the loss for the Cardinals. She gave up four earned runs and struck out one over her 2.2 innings of work.
