SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The HBU softball team split a double header with the UIW Cardinals Friday night at H.E.B. Field.
In game one,
Caitlyn Brockway put the Huskies ahead in the first inning and
Lyndie Swanson shut the door on the UIW offense.
Shelby Echols started the Huskies off in the tip of the fist with a double.
Avery Drake advanced her over to third before Brockway came to the dish and sent a shot over the left field wall to give the Huskies an early 2-0 lead.
Echols walked to lead off the third inning and was sacrificed over to second by Drake. After Brockway hit a single,
Jasie Roberts hit a sac fly to center field to drive in the third run of the game for HBU.
Lyndie Swanson put in another dominating performance for HBU, tossing a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits, walking one, and striking out two over 7.0 innings of work. This is her sixth complete game of the season and lowered her ERA to 3.22 for the season.
In game two, Echols led off the game by reaching on an error and was advanced to second on a ground out. Roberts sent a doubled down the left field line driving in Echols to get the scoring started for HBU. In the second inning
Sarah Venker led off the inning getting hit by a pitch and was later driven in on an RBI triple from
Riley Martin to open the HBU lead to 2-0.
UIW responded however with a four run bottom of the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead, their first of the series. A couple of base knocks coupled with a few Husky errors capped off by a two-rbi double was all the damage the Cardinals could do.
In the top of the fifth inning, Echols led off with a single before Drake hit a double to put two runners into scoring position. Brockway came to the dish and drove in Echols to narrow the Cardinal lead to just one before tying things up with one run in the top of the sixth.
The Cardinals walked it off on an Avalon Sanchez double in the bottom of the seventh to split the day's double header.
Madison Cotton got the start for HBU, giving up four runs, one earned, on seven hits and two walks while striking out one over 4.0 innings of work. She was relieved by
Sarah Venker, who was credited with the loss for the Huskies, allowed one earned run, struck out three and allowed one hit in her 2.1 innings of work.
The Huskies and Cardinals meet for the rubber game of the series Saturday afternoon at HEB Field with first pitch scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
