HAMMOND, La – The HBU softball team dropped the first two games of a three game series against the Southeastern Lady Lions Friday afternoon at North Oak Park.
Southeastern (33-12, 9-2 SLC) jumped ahead in the first inning and would not look back from there. After scraping across a run in the first, the Lady Lions put up a four spot in the bottom of the third, including a bases clearing triple from Maddie Watson and an RBI single from Madisen Blackford.
Avery Drake and
Kaicey Hagler had the only two hits for the Huskies (12-26, 2-11 SLC) in game one.
Lyndie Swanson got the start for coach Hall and the Huskies, giving up five runs on seven hits across 3.0 innings.
Sarah Venker came into the game in relief and gave up no runs on three hits while striking out four in her three innings of work.
In game two,
Caitlyn Brockway accounted for all six of the Husky runs, by hitting two three-run blasts. In the first she sent one deep over the left field fence to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead. In the top of the fourth she sent another bomb over the center field fence.
Madison Cotton toed the rubber for HBU in game two, allowing nine runs on eight hits over 1.2 innings pitched. Swanson came in relief and allowed five runs on eight hits over 3.2 innings of work. KK Ladner earned the win for Southeastern. Four separate Lady Lions had three hits while Watson drove in five.
Brockway ended the day with two homeruns and six RBIs, just two short of tying the HBU record for most RBIs in a game.
Shelby Echols led off the game with a single and scored twice while
Breana Herrera,
Justice Palmer, Savage, and Hagler all had hits for the Huskies.
Both teams will square off in the final game of the series at noon on Saturday at North Oak Park.
