HOUSTON – The HBU softball team dropped the final game of a three game series against the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Husky Field.
The Islanders (17-22, 5-4) combination of Denay Smith and Grace Gilbert in the circle kept the Husky bats quiet, shutting out the Huskies for a third consecutive game. Gilbert earned the win after relieving Smith in the bottom of the fourth with traffic on the Husky base paths. She came in and threw up a zero with HBU (12-23, 2-9 SLC) threatening and finished the final 3.1 innings not allowing a run or a hit and striking out two.
For HBU, Swanson threw her fourth consecutive complete game for the Huskies but picked up her sixth loss on the season. She threw all seven innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out four.
Shelby Echols and
Haylie Savage recorded the only two Husky hits in the game.
Pal Egan broke up a 0-0 game in the fifth inning with a home run to right center field for the Islanders. In the top of the sixth, Monee Montilla hit a double off the left field wall to score Sydney Hoyt who reached base on an error.
The Huskies resume Southland Conference action next weekend when they travel to Hammond, Louisiana to take on Southeastern on Friday and Saturday.
