SB: Huskies Pick Up Two Wins Against Bears and Panthers

Rubber game against Bears is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sunday

HOUSTON – The HBU softball team picked up two wins against Brown and Prairie View A&M Saturday afternoon and into the evening at Husky Field.

GAME ONE

The Huskies used a big fourth inning in their first game of the afternoon to push themselves past the Brown Bears (2-6).

Brown got the scoring started in the one, putting up a two spot in the top of the third inning on an error from the Huskies and a pair of singles.

HBU (9-7) responded quickly in the bottom of the fourth inning as they worked walks and put a lot of pressure on the Brown pitching staff. Jasie Roberts led off the inning for HBU by reaching on a dropped ball by the first baseman. After advancing to second on a ground out, she was driven in on a line drive single from Sarah Venker. Venker stole second before Breana Herrera walked to put two runners on. Justice Palmer walked, loading the bases for HBU. Shelby Echols also earned a walk to drive in her first run of the afternoon. Autumn Sydlik broke the game open with a rocket to third and an error allowed two more runs to score for HBU. The Huskies would close out the game with a 4-2 win.

Sarah Venker got the start in the circle for HBU, throwing her first complete game of the season. Over her seven innings of work, she allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits, four walks, and a couple of strikeouts. She also recorded two hits of her own in the game and raised her average to .385.

GAME TWO

Six Huskies drove in runs in HBU's second game of the day which saw the Huskies fly past the PVAM Cougars (0-16) in a run rule shortened game, 9-1.

HBU jumped out to a lead in the first inning, as Echols opened things up with a base hit before getting caught stealing. Sydlik got hit with a pitch and Brockway singled to center to put two runners on for HBU. Jasie Roberts came to the dish and cleared the bases with a triple into right center, giving HBU a 2-0.

The game would remain 2-0 until the Huskies put up a five spot in the bottom of the fifth. RBI's from Riley Martin, Palmer, Baylee Chandler, and Venker gave HBU a 7-0 lead.

Prairie View responded with traffic on the bases in the top of the sixth, but they were only able to scratch across one run.

The game was called due to a run-rule buy the Huskies after Brockway singled, Roberts doubled, and Martin cleared the bases with a triple.

Echols finished the game with three hits, improving her batting average to .551 on the season. Brockway, Roberts, Martin, and Chandler each had two hits for HBU. Madison Cotton earned the start in the circle for head coach Mary-Ellen Hall's Huskies. She threw five shutout innings, allowed six hits and struck out one, picking up her first win on the season.

The Huskies will look to even the weekend series against Brown tomorrow after noon at Husky Field with first pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
