LAKE CHARLES, La. – HBU scored three in the first and two more in the second and five Husky pitchers made it stand up the rest of the way in a 5-3 victory over McNeese to clinch the opening Southland Conference series Saturday night at Joe Miller Ballpark.
Junior catcher
Parker Edwards went 1-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs for the Huskies (8-15, 2-0 SLC) and has an extra-base hit in eight of his last 10 games. Sophomore second baseman
Sebastian Trinidad was 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI and scored and junior shortstop
Diego Davila was 1-for-4 with a double, an RBI and scored. Junior designated hitter
Caleb Munton also doubled and scored.
Senior righthander
Jared Burch (1-2) picked up the win, allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and four walks in five innings. Senior righthander
Andrew Reitmeyer earned his fifth save, allowing a pair of hits, but striking out three. His five saves are tied for ninth on HBU's single-season list and he now has 10 career saves, which is tied for seventh.
Josh Leslie went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and scored a run, while Reid Bourque was 1-for-3 with a double and scored for the Cowboys (11-12, 0-2).
Ty Abraham (2-3) took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits with five strikeouts and a walk in two innings. Christian Vega, Brian Shadrick and Daniel Hecker held the Huskies hitless over the final seven innings. Hecker was perfect over the final three innings, striking out two.
Junior centerfielder
Austin Roccaforte led off the game with a walk, then scored on Davila's doubled. Edwards followed with his third home run of the series, a two-run blast to center, to put HBU ahead, 3-0.
Munton led off the second with a double, then came home on Trinidad's double. Trinidad would go to third on a wild pitch and score on a passed ball to extend the Huskies' lead to 5-0.
McNeese answerd in the bottom of the second on Leslie's RBI double and Braden Duhon's RBI groundout.
The score remained 5-2 until the seventh when Bourque doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brad Burckel.
Reitmeyer struck out Schyler Thibodaux to lead off the ninth, but Julian Goznales and Burckel had back-to-back singles, then moved up to second and third on a wild pitch. Reitmeyer then struck out Kade Hunter and Payton Harden to seal the victory.
The series concludes with a 1 p.m. first pitch Sunday.
