SB: Huskies Drop Final Two Games of Lady Bison Tournament

Huskies have ten days off before facing Texas A&M

NASHVILLE, Tennessee – The HBU softball team dropped their final two games of the Lady Bison Invitational Sunday evening to the Bowling Green Falcons and the Lipscomb Lady Bison at Draper Diamond.

GAME ONE

Bowling Green (12-5) scored five runs through the first two innings which would prove to be too much for the Huskies to overcome.

Haylie Savage hit her first home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning, driving in Caitlyn Brockway and Shelby Echols. A bases loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth inning brought the Huskies to back within one score of Bowling Green, but two runs in the top of the seventh iced the game for the Falcons.

Sarah Venker (1-4) got the start of the Huskies and gave up seven runs, five earned, on nine hits while striking out four over her seven innings of work. Jasie Roberts, Brockway, and Echols recorded a multi-hit game for HBU.

GAME TWO

The Lady Bison used walks to get base runners on in the early innings as they put up four runs in the first two innings.

HBU answered in the top of the fourth with a bases-clearing three-run-triple from Savage who drove in Brockway, Roberts, and Avery Drake to cut the Lady Bison lead to just one. Lipscomb however responded with six combined runs in the fourth and fifth innings to open their lead 10-3.

After being down seven, the Huskies nearly stormed all the way back in the top of the seventh inning. Roberts led off the top of the seventh with a home run to left field for HBU. Echols came to the dish and singled to left before Roberts singled to right. Brockway hit a grounder to shortstop who committed an error and allowed each runner to advance a base. Savage stepped to the dish and worked an 11-pitch at-bat before launching a grand slam to right field. Unfortunately, the Lady Bison got out to too big of a lead and the Huskies were unable to complete the comeback.

Savage totaled seven RBI's, one short of the school record for most in a game.  Echols finished the day with three hits, extending her season-opening hitting streak to 20 games, while raising her season average to a Southland Conference-leading .551.

Madison Cotton got the start in the circle for the Huskies, giving up 10 runs, nine earned, on  13 hits, eight walks, and totaled five strikeouts.

The Huskies have a ten day break before traveling to College Station to play the Texas A&M Aggies on March 23rd. The Huskies open up conference play at Husky Field on March 25th against Northwestern.
