SB: Huskies Fall to Aggies, 5-4

Huskies open up Southland schedule Friday against Northwestern State

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The HBU softball team dropped their final game before the start of the official 2022 Southland Conference schedule to the Texas A&M Aggies 5-4 Wednesday evening at Davis Diamond.

Texas A&M (18-10) got on the board early in the first inning when catcher Haley Lee hit a two run homer to take a 2-0 lead. HBU (10-12) starting pitcher Sarah Venker got through the next two inning unscathed before the Huskies finally answered in the top of the fourth.

Avery Drake opened the inning with a walk and scored when Jasie Roberts reached on a throwing error by the Aggie third baseman before coming all the way around to score and tie the game at two. Caitlyn Brockway sent a double down the left field to get into scoring position. Haylie Savage sacrificed Brockway to third, but the Huskies were unable to drive her in and stranded her base heading into the bottom half of the inning.

Madison Cotton came in relief of Venker and got through a clean bottom of the fourth before giving up two runs, one earned, in the bottom of the fifth giving the Aggies a 4-2 lead. In the top of the sixth inning Drake reached first on a catcher's interference call before Brockway came to the dish and hit a two run tank to tie things at four, her fourth homer of the season.

After opening the inning with a walk, Rylen Wiggins stole second and walked it off for the Aggies when she scored on a throwing error after stealing third.

Brockway had two hits for the Huskies and Kacie Hagler had one. Venker, Cotton, and Lyndie Swanson all saw action in the circle for the Huskies this evening. Swanson was tagged with her second loss of the season after giving up an unearned run in the seventh. The trio combined to strike out eight while giving up just five hits over 6.1 innings.

The Huskies open Southland Conference play with a three game series against the Northwestern State Lady Demons beginning with a double header on Friday afternoon at Husky Field. All of the weekend action can be watched live on ESPN+.
