HOUSTON – HBU trailed by as many as 20 before pulling to within one with just a minute left on the clock before ultimately falling, 75-70, to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Sharp Gym on Saturday night.
Sophomore
Brycen Long gave HBU (9-16, 5-7 SLC) a 3-2 lead after knocking down three free throws at the 17:01 mark but the Huskies went scoreless for more than five minutes while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (19-10, 6-6 SLC) built a 16-3 lead. That lead grew to 20, 25-5, before the Huskies started to trim their deficit. HBU used a 7-0 run that included five points from
Darius Lee to get back to 12 down, 29-17. The TAMUCC lead again grew to 20 but HBU scored the final six points of the half, all at the foul line, to enter halftime trailing 41-27.
In the second half,
Khristion Courseault knocked down a three and made a layup two possessions later to get HBU back to a single-digit deficit, 45-36, after trailing by at least 10 for more than 15 minutes. The Islanders answered on their next possession with a trey and their lead got back as high as 15, 67-42, with 9:12 remaining. The Huskies went on their best run of the game from there, scoring the next nine points with a pair of
Brycen Long free throws with 7:23 on the clock to make it a 62-56 ballgame.
The teams then traded buckets until a three from Long and a layup by Lee on consecutive possessions got the Huskies to just two down, 68-66, with 2:38 left. TAMUCC's Terrion Murdix made a pair of free throws with 1:19 on the clock and on HBU's next possession,
Sam Hofman made a driving layup and drew a foul, making the free throw for a 70-69 game with 1:00 to play. HBU could not get over the hump, however, as the Islanders made five of six free throw attempts in the final minute and the Huskies' three attempt by Lee while down three with six seconds remaining fell short.
Courseault led HBU with 16 points, knocking down 4-of-9 from three-point range. Lee finished with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists while Long added 12 points and four rebounds.
Jade Tse dished out six assists and had seven points.
The Huskies shot 37.7 percent (20-of-53) from the floor and connected on 24-of-28 (85.7 percent) from the foul line. HBU forced 14 turnovers while committing 13 and blocked seven shots.
TAMUCC was led by Myles Smith with 16 points while Isaac Mushila had a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Islanders shot 40 percent (24-of-60) from the floor and 83.3 percent (20-of-24) from the charity stripe. TAMUCC also out-rebounded the Huskies, 40-31.
HBU will play its final road game of the season on Wednesday, Mar. 2, when the Huskies travel to New Orleans, La. to face the New Orleans Privateers at 7:00 p.m.
