MBB: Five Huskies Score in Double-Figures in Win Over Maine-Fort Kent

Sam Hofman led five HCU players with at least 10 points

HOUSTON – Sam Hofman led all players with 17 points and Andrew King pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds as the HCU men's basketball team tied the program record for fewest points allowed in a game, defeating Maine at Fort Kent, 100-33, on Tuesday evening in Sharp Gym. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.

HCU (3-7) scored first with a pair of Brycen Long free throws but the visiting Bengals (2-8) held an 8-7 advantage at the 16:35 mark. That led to the Huskies going on a 13-0 run with six of the 13 coming from Bonke Maring. From there, the HCU lead steadily grew and reached 24, 47-23, at halftime.

The Huskies opened the second half with an 11-point run to build their lead up to 58-23 just 3:15 in. HCU went 11-of-16 to open the second half while holding the Bengals to just 1-of-10 during the same stretch, taking a 72-26 lead.

The Huskies' 33 points allowed matches the previous low for points allowed with the last instance coming on Jan. 31, 1984 in a 72-33 win over Prairie View A&M. HCU held UMFK to just 19.7 percent (12-of-61) shooting from the floor and held a 59-25 advantage on the boards. The Huskies scored 64 of their 100 points in the paint.

Hofman finished the game shooting 7-of-8 from the field, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, for 17 points while pulled down five rebounds. Long ended the night with 16 points with Pierce Bazil contributing 15, Bonke Maring adding 12 and Maks Klanjscek scoring 10. King, who pulled down 10 rebounds last game, led all players on the board with 13 rebounds. Klanjscek and Chigozie Achara also set new career-bests on the boards, finishing with seven and nine, respectively.

HCU shot 54.8 percent (40-of-73) from the floor, 38.1 percent (8-of-21) from three and 70.6 percent (12-of-17) from the foul line. The team's 59 rebounds is the highest total of the season.

The Huskies close out their four-game homestand on Saturday, Dec. 10, evening with a visit from the UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros to Sharp Gym at 7:00 p.m.
