WSOC: Huskies Fall to Lamar in SLC Semis, 1-0

The regular season conference champion ends HCU’s season

NATCHITOCHES, La. – HCU kept it tight against regular season champion and No. 1 seed Lamar in the semifinals of the 2022 Southland Conference women's soccer tournament on Friday afternoon but the Huskies' season came to an end with a 1-0 defeat at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.

The Huskies (7-10-3) got a strong effort in goal from Chloe Bagshaw who finished the day with a career-high nine saves. The lone goal of the match came on a free kick from just outside the 18 yard box with Laura Linares putting a shot into the top right corner off the fingertips of a diving Bagshaw in the 34th minute.

HCU managed just three shots on goal, all in the first half, but Wednesday's hero Alexa Huerta putting the team's first shot on target in the 22nd minute. Xya Balderas and Alexia Murillo both had shots stopped by Lamar (14-1-2) goalkeeper Nicole Panis late in the first half.
