MBB: Huskies Fall at No. 12 Texas

Sophomore Tristan Moore leads the Huskies with eight points

AUSTIN, Texas – HCU men's basketball fell into a hole early and never recovered, falling on the road to 12th-ranked Texas at the Moody Center on Thursday night, 82-31. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.

The Huskies (0-2) took a while to find their footing against a suffocating Texas (2-0) defense, falling behind 16-0 while being forced into six turnovers in the game's first five minutes. The HCU deficit grew as the first half went on with the Huskies shooting just 20 percent (5-of-25) from the floor to the Longhorns' 47.2 percent (17-of-36). Texas took advantage of 15 offensive rebounds to build a lead that grew as the game went on.

For the game, HCU finished with 21 turnovers and was out-rebounded 56-33. The Longhorns turned those 21 turnovers into 32 points while the Huskies managed just four points off of 14 Texas miscues. The Huskies ended the night shooting 21.7 percent (13-of-60) from the floor and 16 percent (4-of-25) from three. Texas shot 51.5 percent (35-of-68) for the field but only 13.6 percent (3-of-22) from beyond the arc.

Sophomore Tristan Moore led the Huskies with eight points, connecting on 3-of-7 from the floor and 2-of-4 from long-range. Moore also had three rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Chigozie Achara, Sam Hofman, Bonke Maring and Deshon Proctor all had five rebounds for HCU. Texas had six different players score either 10 or 11 points with Timmy Allen and Dillon Mitchell both recording double-doubles.

The Huskies open a three-game homestand this coming Monday, Nov. 14, when they host Champion Christian in the team's home opener in Sharp Gym at 7:00 p.m.
