HOUSTON – Friday evening will be Senior Night and mark the end of the regular season for the HCU women's soccer team when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Sorrels Field. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.
The Huskies (5-9-3, 5-5-1 SLC) will be honoring three players,
Talin Rizo,
Anna Briseno and
Angela Baltimore, along with manager Samantha Cerritos prior to the start of Friday's game. HCU and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (8-7-1, 5-5-1 SLC) are currently tied in the league standings in fifth place with 16 points.
HCU dropped a pair of matches last weekend to regular season champion Lamar and Texas A&M-Commerce. Junior
Evelyn Slaughter scored her first goal of the season in the 2-1 defeat to TAMUC. The Huskies and Islanders met in September in Corpus Christi with the hosts coming away with a 2-1 win. Freshman
Alexa Huerta scored for HCU in the loss.
The Islanders also lost a pair of home matches last weekend, falling to Northwestern State and Lamar by identical 2-1 scores. TAMUCC has boasted the top offense in the league this season, scoring 35 goals in 16 matches. Morgan Westbury and Megan Guy are tied for the team lead with seventh goals.
Depending on the outcomes of Friday's games, the Huskies will be either the no. 4 seed or the no. 6 seed at the SLC Championship Tournament.
The SLC Tournament begins with three games on Wednesday, Nov. 2, in Natchitoches, La. The semifinal round will be played on Friday, Nov. 4, followed by the championship on Sunday, Nov. 6.
