WSOC: Second Half Goal Sinks Huskies

Evelyn Slaughter scores her first goal of the season in the loss

HOUSTON – HCU fell behind in the eighth minute with junior Evelyn Slaughter evening things up less than 15 minutes later but Texas A&M-Commerce found a second half goal to down the Huskies, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Sorrels Field. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.

The Huskies (5-9-3, 5-5-1 SLC) out-shot the visitors, 21-7, on the afternoon but the Lions (6-8-2, 6-4-1 SLC) were efficient in scoring twice on just three shots on goal.

TAMUC got on the board just 7:07 into the match when Karalie Morrison possessed a cross from Mya Mitchell in front of the goal, turning and firing into the net. Katie Marker and Slaughter both had shot attempts in the minutes leading up the 22nd minute when Talin Rizo passed a ball back to Kat Lazor in the Huskies' defensive half and Lazor played a beautiful long ball ahead for Slaughter who ran it down and beat Jen Peters to even the score. HCU held a 12-3 advantage in shots in the first half but went into the break tied.

In the second half, Mia Salas had a shot from the top of the 18-yard box bounce off the crossbar missing just high in the 59th minute. Less than four minutes later the Lions converted on a corner kick with the corner off the foot of Ashley Campuzano meeting Mindy Shoffitt near the back post where Shoffitt headed it in past Chloe Bagshaw. Later, in the 71st minute, Ryan Ford had a laser off her right foot stopped at close range from inside the 18. A Katie Marker shot was also stopped cold in the 83rd minute with a Marker header, on target, stopped at the 83:30 mark.

Slaughter's goal was her first of the season while Lazor's assist was her third and Rizo's her second. The Huskies put eight attempts on goal and held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks earned.

The regular season comes to a close for HCU on Friday, Oct. 28, against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7:00 p.m. at Sorrels Field.
