HOUSTON – This Saturday evening the HBU men's basketball team hosts the Nicholls Colonels in the Huskies' second game of a four-game stretch at home with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m. in Sharp Gym. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Randy McIlvoy and Jordy Hultberg on the call while Husky fans can also listen in to Husky Sports Network audio broadcast with Garrett Jones, available at HBUHuskies.com.
The Huskies (6-11, 2-2 SLC) are coming off a 77-66 loss to New Orleans while Nicholls (12-9, 2-2 SLC) earned an 81-71 win at McNeese on Thursday.
Brycen Long set a new career-high in blocked shots with three in the loss to UNO while also scoring eight points.
Darius Lee and
Jade Tse tied for the team-lead with 15 points in the loss and
Khristion Courseault added 11.
Tse is averaging 12 points per game over the last five games, raising his scoring average from 5.9 ppg to 7.8 ppg for the season. During that stretch, he is 4-of-9 (44.4 percent) from three. Lee is averaging 20.8 ppg through four SLC games this season, the second-highest average in the conference.
The Colonels are led by senior Ty Gordon who is averaging 20.4 ppg in 17 games this season, ranking second in the SLC in scoring. He is averaging more than nine three-pointer attempts per game and his 3.76 made threes per game ranks eighth nationally. Fellow senior Devante Carter is the only other Nicholls player averaging double-figures, scoring 12.4 ppg. Ryghe Lyons has been a defensive presence inside, ranking 48
th in the nation with 1.9 blocked shots per game. Sophomore Pierce Spencer has been the team's top scorer in conference play, averaging 18.3 ppg.
Nicholls has won the last four meetings between the two programs with the last HBU victory coming in Sharp Gym on Feb. 16, 2019. The Huskies won that game 88-82.
HBU will be right back on the Sharp Gym floor this Thursday, Feb. 3, to take on Northwestern State at 7:00 p.m. as part of a doubleheader after a women's game starting at 5:00 p.m.
