CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – HBU led for more than 33 minutes of game time and got career-highs in multiple categories from
Darius Lee and
Sam Hofman while handing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi its first home loss of the season on Saturday afternoon at the American Bank Center.
It took more than three minutes for either team to get on the board and after a 2-2 tie the Huskies (6-10, 2-1 SLC) got out to a 10-4 lead after a
Sam Hofman layup at the 13:30 mark. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (15-5, 2-1 SLC) scored the next four to get back within two. In a less than two minute stretch, HBU answered with an 11-0 run thanks to a trio of threes from
Za-Ontay Boothman and
Darius Lee for a 21-8 advantage with just under nine minutes to go in the half.
The final 8:47 of the half saw the Islanders close the gap thanks to free throws, making 14-of-16 from the charity stripe compared to just seven points from the field while the Huskies failed to reach the free throw line in the half. HBU took a 30-29 lead into the half.
The Islanders came out and scored the first five points of the half for a 34-30 lead, their largest of the game before a Hofman triple got HBU on the board in the half. TAMUCC's Trevian Tennyson made one of two free throw attempts to make it a two-point game before the huskies answered with a five-point run to regain a lead they wouldn't relinquish over the final 17 minutes of the game.
TAMUCC got back to within two, 41-39, but the Huskies got back ahead by 10 on a pair of occasions, both at 53-43 and 63-53. The 63-53 HBU advantage came after a
Khristion Courseault three with 5:13 on the clock but the Islanders scored the next six to again cut their deficit back to four. HBU continued to have an answer for the Islanders, keeping at least a four-point lead the rest of the way and making free throws down the stretch.
Lee led all players with 25 points, in just 28 minutes on the floor, for his second-consecutive games with 25. The senior finished 8-of-12 from the floor, 2-of-3 from beyond the arc and 7-of-9 from the foul line. He set new career-highs in assists, with six, and steals, with six, and pulled down five rebounds. Hofman, meanwhile, posted his first career double-double with 18 points and a career-best 13 rebounds. He was 5-of-9 from the field in the win.
Zion Tordoff added nine for the Huskies wile
Jade Tse had eight, Courseault had seven and
Hunter Janacek finished with six. HBU out-rebounded the Islanders 35-31 with both teams committing 16 turnovers.
The Huskies shot 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the floor while holding the Islanders to just 38.6 percent (22-of-57). HBU won the battle in the paint, out-scoring TAMUCC 40-30 near the basket.
A four-game homestand awaits the Huskies beginning this coming Thursday, Jan. 27, when New Orleans comes to Sharp Gym for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
