DALLAS – The Huskies lost 3-1 to the 9
th ranked SMU Mustangs Thursday night at Washburne Stadium on SMU's campus.
The Huskies had a tough early season test against the Mustangs who were coming off of a huge win against the Stanford Cardinal just a few days prior.
Â
"This was a great early test for our group which we learned a lot from," HBU head coach
Ryan Pratt said. "Whenever you come up against a nationally ranked Top-Ten team it is always going to be a tough game."
Â
SMU (2-0) got off to a quick start with a 5
th minute goal by Knut Ahlander who used his left foot from the top of the box off a Papa Ndoye pass. In the 10
th minute HBU's (1-2)
Gianluca Natera nearly evened the score but just missed the upper-90 to tie things up. A few possessions later saw Natera send in a corner kick which was flicked towards the far post by
Bangelee Sesay but just missed wide right for a Mustang goal kick.
Â
 The 17
th minute saw SMU's Gabriel Costa score on a bullet from 30 yards out into the lower right hand corner of goal to extend SMU's lead, 2-0.
Â
HBU's
Gustavo Otero appeared in his second match of the season for the Huskies, his first start. He had great diving saves in the 31
st and 40
th minutes to keep the SMU lead at 2-0 heading into halftime.
Â
The Huskies nearly got on the board early in the second half when
Nathan Karmbor got past the SMU defense and sent a chip shot over the keeper, who was off his line, wide right. The Huskies finally got on the board in the 55
th minute when
CJ Smith received a pass from Natera, took one hard step and sent a bomb into the upper left-90 from the right side of the box to cut into SMU's lead, 2-1.
Â
Gabriel Costa scored again for the Mustangs in the 65
th minute on a cross from Lane Warrington. HBU's
Luis Poblacion nearly brought the Huskies back to within one on a free kick from 35 yards out in the 68
th minute, which was saved on a full extension deflection by SMU's goalkeeper Cole Johnson.
Â
For the game the Mustangs led the Huskies in shots and shots on goal 19(8)-8(2), but the Huskies held the edge in corner kicks 4-1. HBU's Otero tallied five saves on the night to Johnson's one. Husky forward Smith saw his goal streak continue for the club having now scored in each of the Huskies first three contests.
"We will be looking to build on our second half performance tonight," Pratt said. "I saw a lot of positives out there that we can take with us on our trip to Chicago."
Â
The Huskies will travel to Chicago to take on UIC Monday night at 7pm.
