HUNTSVILLE, Texas – HBU received outstanding efforts from its two rookie outside hitters, but Sam Houston held off the Huskies, 3-2 (27-25, 17-25, 26-24, 28-30, 15-12), in the finale of SHSU Invitational Saturday afternoon in Johnson Coliseum.
Sophomore outside hitter
Sara Arroyo hit .395 with 20 kills and seven digs, while freshman outside hitter
Alyssa May recorded a double-double with 18 kills, 13 digs and five blocks. Senior middle blocker
Jada Allen had nine kills and eight blocks and senior middle blocker
Ebonie Ballesteros had eight kills and seven blocks. Junior setter
Ellie Wipf handed out 47 assists with 11 digs. Sophomore libero
Kaley Feris came up with 18 digs and freshman defensive specialist
Tatiana Evans had 17.
Breanne Chausse led the Bearkats with 24 kills to go along with four digs and four blocks, while Ashley Lewis had 18 kills and 17 digs. De'Janae Gilmore added 10 kills and three blocks. Morgan Janda totaled 50 assists and 17 digs. Hannah Baker had 28 digs and
Madeline McKinney had 15.
HBU hit .143, while SHSU hit .140. The Bearkats outdug the Huskies, 91-86, but HBU outblocked SHSU, 15-10. Each team served up seven aces.
Arroyo and Feris were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Huskies will travel to face Prairie View A&M Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Prairie View, before hosting PVAMU, Lamar and Louisiana Tech at the Houston Marriott Westchase Invitational Friday and Saturday in Sharp Gym.
