VB: Huskies Rebound to Sweep San Diego State

Jada Allen leads HBU with 17 kills on the day

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – HBU bounced back to sweep San Diego State, 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-16), after falling to Sam Houston, 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-22), in non-conference volleyball at the SHSU Invitational Friday at Johnson Coliseum.
 
Against the Aztecs, junior right side Anna Gadway hit .346 with 13 kills, seven digs and four blocks, while senior middle blocker Jada Allen hit .632 with 12 errorless kills and five blocks. Freshman outside hitter Alyssa May added eight kills and nine digs and sophomore outside hitter Sara Arroyo had four kills. Senior middle blocker Ebonie Ballesteros had five errorless kills and three blocks. Junior setter Ellie Wipf dished out 36 assists and led the Huskies (1-1) with 11 digs. Freshman defensive specialist Tatiana Evans had 10 digs and sophomore libero Kaley Feris registered nine.
 
Zoi Faki led SDSU with 11 kills and Victoria O'Sullivan had seven. Ashley Vanderpan had 19 assists and Natalie Smith led the Aztecs with 27 digs.
 
HBU hit .306, while holding SDSU to .153. The Aztecs edged the Huskies in digs, 52-51, but HBU outblocked SDSU, 10-2.
 
In the opener, Arroyo led the Huskies with nine kills, while May had seven to go along with seven digs. Allen and Ballesteros had five kills each, with Allen adding five blocks and Ballesteros three. Wipf had 23 assists and six digs and Gadway had three blocks and nine digs. Feris recorded 21 digs and Evans had 10.
 
Ashley Lewis had 13 kills and 20 digs for SHSU and Breanne Chausse had 11 kills and eight digs. Catherine Krieger chipped in with eight kills and De'Janae Gilmore added seven. Hannah Baker led the Bearkats defensively with 22 digs and Madeline McKinney had eight.
 
SHSU hit .185 for the match and HBU hit .079. The Bearkats outdug the Huskies, 70-64, but HBU had eight blocks to SHSU's six.
 
HBU will face Sam Houston again Saturday at 4 p.m. to wrap up the season's first tournament.
