HBU Announces 2020-21 Athletic Awards

The 2020-21 HBU Athletic Awards were first announced at the Nancy & Don Woo End of the Year Athletics Celebration Monday, then made public and given out at the final convocation of the semester Wednesday.
 
Robbie Robertson Male Athlete of the Year
Denim Rogers, Track & Field
Senior Denim Rogers earned his second career All-America honor by placing eighth in the heptathlon at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships. The San Antonio native broke his own program record by nearly 100 points with a total of 5,653. Rogers was also named the Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year, posting a 3.41 GPA, and was named the Southland Conference Outstanding Field Events Performer at the conference championships, winning gold in the heptathlon, silver in the 60-meter hurdles and finishing eighth in the high jump.
 
Jan Edds Female Athlete of the Year
Kaitlin Smith, Track & Field
Senior Kaitlin Smith won her second-straight gold medal in the pentathlon at the 2021 Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. The Wailuku, Hawai'i, native broke her own program record in the pentathlon with 3,934 points at the Texas Tech Invitational and fell just nine points shy of the mark at the conference championships. Smith was named the Southland Conference Outstanding Field Events Performer at the conference championships, winning gold in the pentathlon, silver in the 60-meter hurdles, placing fifth in the high jump and sixth in the long jump.
 
Varsity Athlete Academic Award
Ashley Arnes, Women's Soccer
Sophomore midfielder Ashley Arnes has a 4.0 GPA as a medical humanities major and is a two-time recipient of the Varsity Athlete Academic Award. The midfielder from Layton, Utah, has appeared in six matches, totaling 200 minutes and took one shot.
 
Sierra Humphrey, Softball
Senior outfielder Sierra Humphrey has a 4.0 GPA as a biology major and is a two-time recipient of the Varsity Athlete Academic Award. The outfielder from Tecumseh, Oklahoma, has appeared in 34 games, has three doubles, a triple, three RBIs and has scored seven runs.
 
Brent Pronger, Baseball
Senior pitcher Brent Pronger has a 4.0 GPA as a management major and is a two-time recipient of the Varsity Athlete Academic Award. The lefthanded pitcher from Burleson, Texas, has made six appearances out of the bullpen, striking out 10 in 8.0 innings.
 
Megan Rickert, Women's Soccer
Senior defender Megan Rickert has a 4.0 GPA as a nursing major and is a two-time recipient of the Varsity Athlete Academic Award and became the first four-time Academic All-Southland Conference selection. The defender from Round Rock, Texas, appeared in all 15 matches matches and ranked second on the team with 1,374 minutes played. She scored her first career goal for the equalizer in a 2-1 overtime victory against Abilene Christian.
 
Sarah Venker, Softball
Senior Sarah Venker has a 4.0 GPA as a nursing major. The pitcher/designated player from Houston has appeared in nine games and has a 3-1 record with a 3.66 ERA, and 23 strikeouts in 36.1 innings. She also has four doubles, a home run, four RBIs and three runs.
 
Galdino Lucero Service Award
Debora Burnett, Financial Aid
Ms. Debora Burnett is currently the Senior Financial Aid Advisor at HBU, working for the University for more than 30 years, and assisting directly with the athletic department in processing scholarships and financial aid for student-athletes. In addition to her financial aid responsibility, Burnett was named the athletic department's Racial Diversity Liaison for Athletics per the department's Stand as One initiative in the spring of 2021.  She continuously goes above and beyond for the athletic department and is regularly seen cheering on athletes in the stands at athletic events. We are continuously thankful for her commitment to our student-athletes during their time HBU.
 
Frances Curtis & Mildred Boone Spirit Award
Coleman Robinson, Football
Robinson is a tight end from Centerville, Texas, and is the president of HBU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He oversaw the SAAC's multiple community service projects and represented the Huskies on the Southland Conference's promotional video. For his playing career, he has made 13 catches for 199 yards and two touchdowns and has been named to the Southland Conference Commissioner's Fall Academic Honor Roll three times.
