MSOC: Huskies Come Up Short to Utah Valley, 2-1

Sophomore Bryant Farkarlun earns his third goal of HBU career

HOUSTON – The HBU men's soccer team lost a 2-1 decision to Utah Valley in their final home match of the season at Sorrels Field on Monday night.

Gustavo Otero was tested early as Utah Valley (3-3,2-3 WAC) took their first shot straight down the middle, but Otero earned his first save in a little over the first two minutes of the game. The Huskies (0-8-2,0-8-1 WAC) had a couple dangerously close to answer but Gianluca Natera and Farkarlun missed just outside. No one was able to find a goal in the first half with three shots on goal from both teams.

The Wolverines came out the half with the momentum, much like the first with a close call and an Otero save in the 48th minute.  Just four minutes after entering the game, with assistance from team leaders Zahir Vazquez and Alejandro Silva, Aaron Nixon found the back of the net for the Wolverines in the 71st minute. Fighting for possession after a UVU free kick, it was just two minutes later that James Dunning set up Silva to lead Carter Johnson for the winning goal.

With just a little over 10 minutes in regulation, sophomore Bryant Farkarlun earned the penalty kick goal for his third goal of the season. With the clock at just 30 seconds remaining and a final shot from senior Jordi Cobo, the Wolverines nab the final home match for the Huskies.

The Huskies had 11 shots with four on goal to UVU 16 shots with six on goal. The Wolverines had nine corner kicks with HBU having just two. Gustavo Otero was in the goal for the Huskies with four saves on the night while Joseph Wheelwright had three saves in the goal for Utah Valley.

The Huskies will play their final regular season game in a trip to Colorado to face off with a 6 p.m. matchup against Air Force.
