CORPUS CHRISTI – After five scoreless innings, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi answered to the three run lead the Huskies gained in sixth, then with a walk off single in the eighth from the Islanders, the Huskies comes up short in a 4-3 setback in game one of the SLC series on Friday afternoon at Cabaniss Field in Corpus Christi.
Redshirt freshman left fielder Jasie Roberts went 1-for-3 with the homer to right field in the sixth inning to bring three runs for HBU (19-14, 12-10 SLC). Senior catcher Heidi Jaquez went 1-for-2 extending her hitting streak to 12 games and senior center fielder Riley Bullen went 1-for-3. Sophomore Caitlyn Brockway went 1-for-4 and scored once, while sophomore Sarah Venker went 1-for-4 with a double.
Redshirt freshman Lyndie Swanson (8-1) took the loss in the circle allowing two runs on four hits and a walk throwing 2.0 innings of relief. Senior Jessica Patak threw 5.2 innings allowing two runs on seven hits with a pair of walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Alexandria Torres went 3-for-4 scoring once while Kennedy Jimenez went 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Islanders (18-25, 8-11 SLC). Haley Morse went 2-for-4 scoring once while three more Islanders brought in a run.
Beatriz Lara (13-9) threw the full game for the win allowing three runs on five hits and walking five with five strikeouts.
The Huskies were the first to get on the board after five scoreless innings with a three run homer from Roberts. After a Torres single and a walk, Gabriella Torres singled to bring in their first run. With another walk and two now on base, Jimenez nails a base hit to inch the Islanders closer with another run.
Huskies were help scoreless in the seventh. Morse opened the lineup with a double to left field. Morse was able to advance to third after a sacrifice bunt from Pal Egan, and with another base hit from A. Torres, the Islanders sent the teams into an extra inning.
With two outs and a runner on second for the Islanders in the bottom of the eighth, Ashleigh Sgambelluri singled up the middle to bring in the tie breaking run to seal the Huskies fate.
The series will conclude in a doubleheader on Sunday, May 2 with a Noon start.
