HOUSTON – HBU men's soccer fell 4-3 in overtime to UT Rio Grande Valley on Wednesday night at Sorrels Field.
HBU (0-7-1 WAC) got on the board quick just six minutes into the game as Gianluca Natera recorded his second goal of the season with assistance from Jordi Cobo and Bryant Farkarlun. Maintaining the lead throughout the first, Cobo put in a goal of his own with assistance from Farkarlun in the 40th minute for the 2-0 lead against WAC second ranked UTRGV (5-0-2 WAC).
The Huskies used the momentum from the first half quickly into the second half. Although missing his first shot taken, Farkarlun reached the lower left corner for a taste of his own goal, his second of the season, just 1:42 out of the half. Huskies held the Vaqueros to nil, but Martin Tellez answered with assistance from Juan Rivera and Javier Chavez to get on the board a little over the 59th minute. With five minutes gone by, the Vaqueros inched back in with another goal by team goal leader William Aiko. Huskies struggle to find their momentum and with 15 minutes to go, UTRGV found the back of the net on a free kick to the center of the goal to tie the game. The teams head into overtime and a little over the 93rd minute, Moiad Ankir lead Rivera with a goal in the lower right corner to seal the Huskies fate with the 4-3 victory.
The Huskies had 11 shots to the Vaqueros' 13 with six on goal to UTRGV seven. Gustavo Otero had four saves in the goal for HBU while UTRGV Trevor Schnieder had three.
Huskies will see action next on Monday, April 5 for Senior Night as they host a 7 p.m. matchup with Utah State.
