HOUSTON – Sophomore Luis Poblacion matched his freshman campaign goal total for the HBU men's soccer team scoring the first goal of the game in a second half penalty kick in the 1-1 tie against San Jose State on Saturday afternoon at Sorrels Field.
HBU (0-4-2,0-2-2 WAC) had an early save from JP Becerra adding two more in the first half on the Spartans three shots on goal. Spartans (1-1-1,1-1-1 WAC) had a heavy second half with 13 shots to HBU six with both teams putting up three shots on goal. Poblacion lined up for a penalty kick in the 49th minute putting the Huskies on the board with a goal. It wasn't very long after until San Jose answered with a goal from the penalty spot just over the 50th minute mark. Poblacion went for another shot in the final minute but was blocked. San Jose took down the field with one last shot, but was Becerra posted the save to send the teams into overtime. Both teams came dangerously close in the first overtime but head into another with teams still tied. A Spartan shot missed high right in the final minutes of extra time and the clock ran down to seal the draw.
HBU had five different Huskies with shots on the nights with Poblacion putting up two attempts on goal as he scored once. Bryant Farkarlun had three shots on the game with one attempt on goal. In the goal, Becerra finished with nine saves. The Huskies attempted nine shots with three on goal while San Jose State attempted 30 with 10 on goal. Sweeney posted two saves in the goal for the Spartans.
HBU will head to Utah to face off with Dixie State for a 6 p.m. matchup on Saturday, March 20.
