HOUSTON, Texas – The HBU Softball team opened their Southland Conference season with a doubleheader split with Abilene Christian. The Wildcats took game one 4-2, while the Huskies finished the late night 10-6.
Game One: The Huskies had four runs on six hits with a homerun from Jasie Roberts, her second of the season in back-to-back weekends. ACU got on the board by three early in the first three innings. Roberts bombed a homer to left field to bring in Caitlyn Brockway in the bottom of the fourth. The Wildcats added their winning run late in the top of the seventh, keeping the victory from the Huskies.
Jessica Patak (3-2) had six strikeouts on the evening in her 6.1 innings pitched. ACU Samantha Bradley (2-6) took the win with two strikeouts on seven innings.
Game Two: The Huskies had 14 hits with an Autumn Sydlik homer, her second of the season in back-to-back weekends, for the 6-6 tie followed by a Riley Bullen and Jackie Jessup double to push across the 10 runs for the HBU win. Huskies took first lead early up 2-0 going into the second. ACU answered with two runs of their own until a Brockway single brought Heidi Jaquez in for the 3-2 lead. The Wildcats pressured the Huskies in a fourth inning surge up by three runs. Sydlik stepped up to bat for a bomb straight over the middle fence for a 3 RBI homer to put the Huskies back in at 6-6. HBU took their last at-bat with bases loaded after a Roberts single to six. Riley Bullen kisses the center field wall for a double to bring three home. Jackie Jessup answers with a double down left field to seal the Bullen run. With a Wildcat at second and third, Lyndie Swanson catches Davila looking for one out remaining. With a grounder to five, Sydlik ends the late night to Brockway for the win.
Lyndie Swanson (1-0) got the win for the Huskies in the circle coming in relief with one hit on three innings with two walks and five strikeouts.
The Huskies will finish the series with Abilene Christian on Saturday, March 13 with first pitch at noon.
