HATTIESBURG, MISS. - The HBU Softball team (5-1) split a pair of games in a doubleheader against Southern Miss (11-4) on Sunday afternoon. Huskies took the first game, 2-0 and the Golden Eagles took the second game, 3-2.
GAME 1: HBU scored two runs with nine hits and zero errors. Southern Miss had zero runs with five hits and one error.
The Huskies took the lead in the top of the third after both Heidi Jaquez and Jasie Roberts both had singles to put two on base. Caitlyn Brockway stepped up to bat, but after being thrown out at first, Jaquez and Roberts were able to advance. Southern Miss had a passed ball leading Jaquez to put the first run on the board for the Huskies, leaving Roberts on third. After a wild pitch, Roberts was able to score the final HBU run just before an Autumn Sydlik double.
The pitching staff went the distance with a shut-out with five walks led by Sarah Venker with three innings of work and two strikeouts and a strike out from Madison Cotton.
GAME 2: HBU had two runs on five hits and one error. Southern Miss had 3 runs with three hits and one error.
Southern Miss took an early lead in the bottom of the first after Destini Brown went for home off a Heather Hill reach after a Husky error. Both teams went scoreless until a home run from Alyssa Davis in the bottom of the fifth bringing in Brown putting the Golden Eagles up 3-0. The Huskies led off the 7th inning with a fight after a single from Roberts and a walk for Riley Martin. Kamryn Parker reached on a second base throwing error, giving Roberts a run on the board for HBU. Sierra Humphrey reached on a fielder's choice to take out Parker, but Martin was able to make it home to inch the Huskies closer. With one out on the board, Karsen Pierce sealed the game with back-to-back strikeouts to claim the victory.
The Huskies will host Prairie View A&M in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 6 as their last games before Southland Conference play begins with a three-game home series against Abilene on March 12-13.
