HOUSTON – The HBU men's soccer team hosted California Baptist at Sorrels Field taking a tough 2-1 loss on Sunday afternoon in WAC play.
HBU (0-3-1, 0-3 WAC) started off strong offensively keeping Gage Rogers closely on guard with two close shots from Bryant Farkarlun and Luis Poblacion in the first 16 minutes of the game. The teams went into the half scoreless with a save from JP Becerra and two for Rogers.
California Baptist ( 0-0,0-0 WAC) forward Luis Mueller came dangerously close with just eight minutes into the second half but was stopped by Becerra. The Lancers were set up for a corner kick and with the assistance from Mueller, Thomas Beecham heads a ball in for a CBU goal. With five new Huskies entering the game in the 64th minute, Zack Nicholaou places a ball for an Alex Reyes goal to put the Huskies back into the game. Becerra held off a few more Lancers shots with 15 minutes left of regular play, and with a missed shot from Farkarlun, Leo Mendez storms down the field and with an assist to Brian Gonzalez, the Lancers post the winning goal in the 83rd minute.
The Huskies had eight shots with three shots on goal. Farkarlun had three shots with one shot on goal while Alex Reyes had two shots with one shot on goal, scoring the single goal for HBU. Jordi Cobo had a dangerously close shot in the final minute of the game to total two shots on the game. HBU goalkeeper Becerra posted five saves on the game.
California Baptist had 11 shots on the game with seven shots on goal. Mueller totaled three shots and three shots on goal with his goal scored while Liad Mordechi ane Tete Vacas had two shots each. Rogers had one goal against and two saves on the game.
The Huskies will head to Las Vegas to face off with UNLV at 8 p.m. central time on Friday, March 5.
