SB: HBU Sweeps In Home Opener

HOUSTON – HBU Softball took a 2-0 sweep against UH-Victoria for their first home series of the 2021 season. The Huskies held the Jaguars scoreless winning 5-0 in both games at Husky Field on Friday evening.  

GAME 1: Huskies begin the the day with a 5-0 victory over the UH-Victoria Jaguars.

HBU (4-0) started the game with Madison Cotton in the circle. Holding off the Jaguars (3-5), the Huskies took their turn at bat. Beginning the startling line up, Avery Drake singled to left center and later stole second base. Jasie Roberts came to the plate and reached on a fielder's choice for the Shelby Echols out on second, with Drake advancing to third. With a walk for Caitlyn Brockway and bases loaded, Heidi Jaquez singled up the middle while advancing to second on the throw to bring home two runs leaving two runners on base. Autumn Sydlik shot a double in the left center to bring home to more runs to end the first inning.  

With Cotton holding UHV again in the second and another single and second base steal from Drake to rotate back through in the bottom of the second, Roberts triples to bring the fifth run in for the Huskies.  

The pitching staff held off the Jaguars allowing zero hits and zero runs by Cotton, Sarah Venker and Elliot Estes. The Huskies had five runs on six hits with five RBIs and zero errors. 

GAME 2: With another strong start by HBU, UHV remains unable to score resulting in another 5-0 for the Huskies. 

Jessica Patak began at the mound going three up three down. Brockway doubled to left center to bring Echols home after her single put her on base. Jaquez singled up the middle to bring home Brockway putting the Huskies up early 2-0. Patak had her second and third strikeout with another three up three down to bring back a strong HBU batting lineup. With Echols on second, Roberts doubles down the left field line to bring in a run. Brockway reached on a drop fly to shortstop, advancing to second with Roberts scoring to advance the HBU lead.  

Zoe Miranda singled up the middle for the first and only Jaguar hit of the night, but Lyndie Swanson pushes HBU back to the plate after Kelsey Tidrick struck out looking. Swanson with another strikeout going three up three down the Huskies went scoreless. After a strikeout going three up three down performance from Katy Janes, the Huskies went into the bottom of the sixth. After a double from Sierra Humphrey and a single by Roberts, two walks for the Huskies brings in Humphrey for the final run of the evening.   

The pitching staff allowed one hit on the game with no runs. HBU had five runs on 11 hits with four RBIs and one error.  

The Huskies will continue the weekend with a trip to Southern Miss for a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
