ABILENE, Texas – After a two-week break from play the HBU men's basketball team dropped a road matchup at Southland Conference co-leader Abilene Christian, 88-59, inside the Teague Center on Wednesday evening.
ACU (17-3, 9-1) built its lead early and quickly against a Huskies' (3-13, 2-6) lineup that had not played in a game in two weeks, using a nine-point run to take a 19-7 lead less than eight minutes into the game. The Wildcat lead grew from there as HBU never gained a lead throughout the game.
Junior
Darius Lee led the Huskies with 14 points off the bench thanks to 7-of-9 shooting from the foul line and 3-of-8 from the floor. Lee also added five rebounds and a pair of steals. Senior
Philip McKenzie led HBU with eight rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench while
Pedro Castro added 10 points.
Ryan Gomes was a perfect 3-of-3 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe to finish with nine points.
The Huskies shot 35.7 percent (20-of-56) from the floor and just 19 percent (4-of-21) from three in the loss while ACU shot 46.5 percent (33-of-71) from the field and 46.4 percent (13-of-28) from deep. The Wildcats, the top team in the nation when it comes to forcing turnovers, took advantage of 25 HBU miscues and turned those into 31 points. The Huskies, meanwhile, forced ACU into 19 turnovers for the second-highest turnover total of the season by the Wildcats.
The Huskies will be back on their home floor this Saturday, Feb. 13, for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off against the Lamar Cardinals.
