EDINBURG, Texas – The HBU women's basketball team is traveling west to take on the University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley Monday night in the UTRGV Fieldhouse. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
The Huskies (3-5, 0-0 SLC) are coming off of a loss to the Texas State Bobcats last Thursday. They trailed by as many as 12 at the end of the third quarter and took the lead late in the fourth before a turnover on their last possession ended up being the difference maker.
On the season, the Huskies are shooting 36 percent from the field and are holding their opponents to just 35 percent shooting. From three point range they are shooting just under 30 percent while holding opponents to just 22 percent. The Huskies are forcing just under 20 turnovers a game and are averaging 18.2 points per game off of turnovers so far.
Timia Jefferson is leading the Huskies in scoring with just over 12 points per game and has missed only three of her 30 free throw attempts on the year.
N'Denasija Collins is averaging 11.4 points and seven boards on 46 percent shooting from the field and 44.4 percent shooting from three.
The Vaqueros (1-5, 0-0 WAC) are coming off of a road loss to Kansas. Their one win on the year came against McNeese State. UTRGV is averaging just under 60 points per game while they give up 69 points per game. They shoot 36.5 percent while their opponents shoot 40 percent from the floor. They are led by Sara Bershers who averages 15.6 points per game while shooting 38 percent from the field and 95 percent from the free throw line and averages six boards.
The Vaqueros have an 8-0 all-time record against the Huskies. The teams last meeting was in 2014 when UTRGV beat the Huskies in Edinburg 75-72.
The Huskies will return home Saturday afternoon when they tipoff with Southwestern Assemblies of God at 3:00 p.m. in Sharp Gym.
